Could we define Candies as a cult-band? Actually, Giulio Calvino & Co. have gained lots of respect, working for years with a fresh DIY attitude, sharing stages of venues all around Europe with 90 Day Men, Calexico, Trumans Water, L7, L’altra, ABPK, Enon, New Black, Xiu Xiu and more. Friendship and mutual consideration have been the ground for the collaborations with John Convertino, Volker Zander and Kevin Branstetter (Trumans Water) for the first album Leaving our Homes (ee:lettro/Turn – 2000).
These major experiences, of course, have changed the band’s desires and approach.
closerfaces-pc-magsWith Dense Waves… The Candies shed their skin, and the new look shines of the restlessness, the frenzy and the directness that make a great rock’n’roll band truly great. Better still, a punk rock band, according to the meaning of this word that Gang of Four, Television, Fall, Primal Scream and Fugazi perpetuated. Candies themselves would be surprised by these comparisons, as they felt coming from the inside this newfound drive for physical and mental freedom.
Their brand new tracks were born in isolation, and nevertheless they caught vibes that are going to be around in 2003. The actual truth is that you can’t listen to this album with your ears only: the youthful pop of Basslines for your Fucking Grave infect your nerves and legs, the chemical groove of Device Power goes straight to your stomach and the infectious tune of Like Tennis Shoes is going to be stuck onto your head forever. Candies disbanded early 2005, ‘causing more than one regret, but the new adventure of Giulio with Hot Gossip is just a confirmation of a restlessness common to every good musician.

You know, what happens when the musicians have the youth, the attitude, the angst, but refuse to take the easy path. Dense Waves packs eight good songs, no filler. AMG
They’ve put together an angular post-punk album…oh shit. let’s face it, Italy rules, and the Candies are only helping out an already good image. GeekAmerica (US)
The Candies have loads of energy and their intensity never wanes or dissipates. Fake Jazz (US)
The entire album feels as if it was channeled from that wonderful era of punk deconstruction. This charisma holds true throughout the disc…you’ll remember how great it is to hear a band that puts more effort into songwriting than “fixing it in the mix”. Splendid e-zine (US)
These guys are more than just Northern Italy’s answer to Radio 4, vocalist Giulio Calvino has the kind of voice that makes you sit up and notice, while the band perform some tight post-punk but also know the dynamics of songs going soft to loud on occasion.. How you say?…’rock? Sreaming Bloody Mess (AUS)
The Candies are simply ace, ‘You Fly While Driving’ is …Trail of Dead on the best acid ever, and ‘Device Power’ is a high-energy punk number all dressed up for the disco. ‘Dense Waves’… is a great release that deserves to be heard by anyone with ears. Logo Magazine (UK)
This is still far more memorable than much of the so called ‘new rock revolution’. With The Candies, it’s the bitterest pill that tastes so sweet. Comes with a Smile (UK)
Its a shoker, all attitude and poise, explosions and crashes. Careless Talk (UK)
This record is anchored to tight beats and driving melodies but there is also an infectious sense of fun. Big Cheese (UK)
This record is screeching post punk, abrasive and possessed of an edgy noisy funk. Unpeeled (UK)
There seems to be a renaissance going on for all things 1979, with the likes of Interpol, Radio 4, and (cough…splutter) The Strokes. Now it’s the turn of the Italians to join and do you know what, they may have just come up with the best album out of all of ‘em. The Candies are simply leading the way forward.
Drowned in Sound/Do Something Pretty (UK)
Spiky, frantic guitars, driving bass lines, indecipherable, semi-shouted vocals, and great hooks. Buy this album, it rocks, and you can dance and sing along to it too. Pennyblackmusic (UK)
Istintivo e sferragliante, nervoso e danzereccio. Blur e dc sound a braccetto sotto l’egida dei Gang Of Four. Rumore (It)
7/8 Blow Up (It)
7/10 Rocksound (It)
Rockstar (It)
Mucchio (It)
Dense Waves Make Your Eyes Wider dovrebbe arrivare a più orecchie possibili. Kronic (It)
MusicbOOm (It)
Rockit (It)
Idbox (It)
Freak Out (It)
Succo Acido (It)
